London Business School Names New Dean

London Business School announced the appointment of Robin Buchanan as Dean, succeeding Dr. Laura Tyson. According to the announcement,

Buchanan is currently the Senior Partner in the UK of Bain & Company Inc., the global business consultancy. He will bring to the School over 30 years' experience of providing advice on strategy, organisation, operations and acquisitions to international business clients. Buchanan was elected Managing Partner of Bain in the UK in 1990, and became Senior Partner in 1996.

I find it interesting that both LBS and INSEAD have hired deans from outside academia. Not necessarily good or bad, but noteworthy.

For more on the appointment of Dean-elect Buchanan, please see "LBS Appoints Consultant as Dean" in the Financial Times. Not surprisingly, Della Bradshaw, seasoned observer of the MBA scene and author of this article, focuses also on the fact that Buchan comes from a background in professional services, just like the new INSEAD dean, Frank Brown.
